Improving Community Awareness

Courses that Make a Difference

Our course offerings focus on key issues facing our communities. Examples include:

Suicide Prevention/Community Awareness

The WellLife Network offers two Suicide Prevention training programs to agencies, universities and other professional organizations. Safe Talk, an internationally recognized suicide-alertness seminar, prepares participants over the age of 15 to become suicide alert. Through our Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), anyone over the age of 16 is trained to provide suicide first aid. Shown by major studies to significantly reduce suicidality, the ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community.

This training is designed for clinicians, counselors and all other professionals interested in learning a comprehensive assessment model for suicide risk. The training course explores the basic components of a comprehensive risk assessment; identifies the seven categories of risk factors in suicide risk assessment; distinguishes among warning signs, proximal and distal risk factors; identifies the different definitions of suicidal behavior; learning to use protective and risk factors to assign risk level for clinical judgment and individualized profile development and match levels of suicide risk with levels of intervention.

This training is sponsored by Office of Mental Health Suicide Prevention Office (SPO) which is seeking to make New York a model Zero Suicide state and a national model for integrating suicide prevention into behavioral health and health care. Zero Suicide is both a philosophy and practical approach to suicide prevention that begins with organizations committing to reducing the number of suicides through delivery of suicide safer care.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health concerns, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. The course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect persons to professional, peer and social supports as well as self-help resources.

Mental Health First Aid allows for early detection and intervention by teaching participants about the signs and symptoms of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addictions. The program offers concrete tools and answers key questions like “What can I do?” and “Where can someone find help?” Participants are introduced to local mental health resources, national organizations, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support.

WellLife Network partners with the Mental Health First Aid USA to bring this course to the community.
